AI and Personalized Dental Medicine and its Relevance for Oral Implantology

The term personalized medicine and dentistry refers to the tailoring of diagnostics and therapeutics to individuals based on each patient's biological, social, and behavioral characteristics and needs. While personalized dental medicine is still far from being a reality, advanced artificial intelligence (AI) technologies with improved data analytic approaches are expected to integrate diverse data from the individual, setting, and system levels, which may facilitate a deeper understanding of the interaction of these multi-level data and therefore bring us closer to more personalized, predictive, preventive, and participatory dentistry, also known as P4 dentistry. In the field of oral regeneration and implantology, more and more AI applications are available to assist dentists in diagnosis and treatment planning, including several commercially available software options that provide performance similar or even superior to that of specialists. Over the next few months, Forum Implantologicum will focus on this hot topic with the following articles from experts in the field:

An in-depth view of artifacts due to cone-beam computed tomography scans and how AI could help improve such images by Prof. Matheus Oliveira (Campinas, Brazil)

A detailed review of AI in the fields of oral surgery and implantology from Prof. Stadlinger and colleagues (Zurich, Switzerland), highlighting that current developments often focus on radiology-based systems, but that language-based systems are starting to be developed
