Stephen T. Chen
Dr. Stephen T. Chen is a specialist periodontist in private practice in Melbourne, Australia. He holds the position of Clinical Associate Professor at the School of Dentistry at the University of Melbourne. He graduated BDS (Malaya) in 1983, MDSc (Melbourne) in 1987, FRACDS in 1988 and PhD in 2008. Dr. Chen’s scientific interests are in the field of tissue regeneration and post-extraction implant outcomes. He has published over 30 papers, authored two textbooks and contributed chapters to six textbooks. Dr. Chen is past-president of the Australian and New Zealand Academy of Periodontists (ANZAP) and Australasian Osseointegration Society (AOS), and past-chairman of the ITI Australasian Section. He is an honorary life member of the AOS. Dr. Chen was ITI President from 2017 – 2021 and a member of the ITI Board of Directors from 2007 – 2023. Prior to becoming ITI President, he served as chairman of the ITI Education Committee for 8 years, and was an editor of the ITI Online Academy.

At the 6th ITI Consensus Conference in 2018, a new classification system that combines the implant placement time and the anticipated loading protocol was introduced by Gallucci and co-workers (Gallucci et al. 2018). For immediate (type 1) implant placement, three implant placement/loading protocols were defined.
Insights
Evidence-based implant dentistry (EBID) is part of the ITI’s DNA and its philosophy, and it is clearly reflected in our Purpose, Mission, and Value statements. It is one of our key differentiators and reassures dentists and ultimately patients that we strive for excellence in everything we do. The aim of this position paper is to define EBID and offer a clear, consistent, and practical instrument to help its implementation in everyday clinical practice.
