Zygomatic implants have been in regular use for several decades, however, there has been little consensus in regard to the related indications, techniques and long-term outcomes. Controversial discussion has accompanied their development and application over the years.

On March 24, 2023, the ITI held the first ever Consensus Workshop on Zygomatic Implants in order to look at and evaluate the current literature towards reaching a consensus and providing evidence-based recommendations for the safe use of zygomatic implants. The meeting, held in Frankfurt, Germany, chaired by Bilal Al-Nawas, drew together the “who is who” from the world of zygomatic implants, a veritable think tank of concentrated expertise.

In four interviews moderated by ITI Fellow Vinay Kumar, the leaders of the three working groups as well as the first authors of the three systematic reviews and additional narrative review provided insights into the discussion and findings of this milestone meeting.

The resulting Consensus paper as well as the four papers on indications for zygomatic implants, the evaluation of surgical techniques in survival rate and complications of zygomatic implants for the rehabilitation of the atrophic edentulous maxilla, the long-term treatment outcomes with zygomatic implants, and biomechanical principles of zygoma implants in function, are being published in the International Journal of Implant Dentistry.
