Susanne S. Scherrer
Prof. Dr. Susanne S. Scherrer is Associate Professor and runs the Biomaterials department within the Division of Fixed Prosthodontics at the University Clinic of Dental Medicine of the University of Geneva in Switzerland, where she earned her dental degree, doctorate and Privat docent. Her research focuses on dental materials, mechanics and clinical failure analysis (fractography). She is a past-President of the IADR Dental Materials Group and of the Academy of Dental Materials. In 2014 she received the IADR Distinguished Scientist Wilmer Souder Award. She is a fellow of the Academy of Dental Materials and Academy of Prosthodontics and is on the editorial board of the Journal of Dental Research. She is co-founder of the Fracto Forum International.

Zirconia has been used in biomedical applications for a long time. Its biocompatibility is not in question. However for structural applications such as in dental implants, zirconia must show improved mechanical performance in addition to its biocompatibility and bone integration aspects.
