Nikos Mattheos
Dr. Nikos Mattheos is a periodontist, researcher and an academic teacher. He maintains a private practice focused in oral rehabilitation and implant dentistry in Hong Kong, is a Visiting Professor at Chulalongkorn University, Bangkok, Thailand and an affiliated researcher at the Faculty of Dental Medicine, Karolinska Institute, Sweden. He has held professorate academic positions in Sweden, Australia and Hong Kong. His research revolves around complications of implant therapy and peri-implantitis, bone regeneration, patient reported outcomes measures in implant therapy and educational development, in particular online teaching. Dr. Mattheos has received numerous awards, including the International Association of Dental Research researcher’s award in 2003 and 2013 and the André Schroeder Research Prize in 2015 and 2021. He is the Editor-in-Chief of the ITI Academy and Associate Editor of the International Journal of Prosthodontics. Dr. Mattheos is a long-serving ITI Fellow, a member of the ITI Education Committee and sits on the ITI Board of Directors.

Biological and biomechanical systems are no exception to this, so it comes as no surprise that “overloading” has long been suspected as a cause of complications and failures in implant dentistry.

In Europe, there is enormous diversity in regard to undergraduate and postgraduate dental education programs. As the increasing demand for implant-based therapies requires educational opportunities associated with implant dentistry, it is necessary for the general dentist to find postgraduate dental courses tailored to the individual needs of the practitioner that are also applicable to their dental practice.
Insights
Evidence-based implant dentistry (EBID) is part of the ITI’s DNA and its philosophy, and it is clearly reflected in our Purpose, Mission, and Value statements. It is one of our key differentiators and reassures dentists and ultimately patients that we strive for excellence in everything we do.
The aim of this position paper is to define EBID and offer a clear, consistent, and practical instrument to help its implementation in everyday clinical practice.
