Lyndon F. Cooper
Dr. Lyndon Cooper is the Dean of the Virginia Commonwealth University’s School of Dentistry. He is a Diplomate of the American Board of Prosthodontics and served as the 2010 President of the American College of Prosthodontists. Dr. Cooper remains active in research and patient care and is focused on enhancing dental education, providing for dental therapeutic excellence, and improving access to oral health care.

One of many unresolved challenges in the evolving arena of dental implant therapy is our understanding of the exact role occlusion plays in clinical success and failure. This report identifies occlusion as a biomechanical factor that is influenced by our clinical decisions and actions made during planning, placement and restoration of implant prostheses.

Peri-implantitis is a treatment-related complication with a biofilm-mediated pathogenesis. Several studies have demonstrated that the progression from peri-implant mucositis to peri-implantitis can be effectively managed by supportive implant therapy. However, the impact of implant prostheses on the evaluation of peri-implant tissues, the control of biofilm by oral hygiene and professional prophylaxis as well as the impact of cement or other prosthetic materials on peri-implant inflammation receive little attention.
