Julia-Gabriela Wittneben
Prof. Dr. med. dent. Julia-Gabriela Wittneben, PhD, MMedSc is an Associate Professor at the Department of Reconstructive Dentistry and Gerodontology at the University of Bern, Switzerland and owns a private practice in Zurich. She is a part-time faculty member at the Harvard School of Dental Medicine in Boston, USA. Prof. Dr. Wittneben received her degree and doctorate from the University of Witten/Herdecke in Germany, completed three-year postgraduate specialization training in prosthodontics at Harvard School of Dental Medicine, and holds a Master of Medical Science from Harvard University. She was awarded the Joseph L. Henry Award for "Overall Achievement in Clinical and Research Training and Contribution to the University" from Harvard University. Her PhD is from ACTA, Netherlands and focuses on esthetics in implant-supported prosthodontics. In 2011, she was appointed Visiting Assistant Professor at both Harvard and Tufts University. Prof. Dr. Wittneben actively participates in research related to prosthodontics, CAD/CAM and implant-supported prosthetics and publishes in international peer-reviewed journals. She is the author of volume 6 of the ITI Treatment Guide series, focusing on extended edentulous spaces in the esthetic zone, which has been translated into 8 languages. She is a Fellow and Speaker of the International Team for Implantology (ITI) and a member of the European Association for Osseointegration (EAO), American College of Prosthodontists (ACP), the Swiss Dental Association (SSO) and Swiss Society of Reconstructive Dentistry (SSRD).

Implant restorations in the esthetic zone remain one of the most challenging restorative procedures in dental medicine. Objective parameters have been proposed for clinicians’ esthetic evaluation. This article provides a general overview and recommendations for use reflecting the current status of the assessment of the esthetic outcome of dental implant restorations.
