Graziano Zappalà
Dr. Graziano Zappalà graduated in dentistry from the University of Catania (Italy) in 2018 and carried out a traineeship and research activities in the Department of Periodontology at the University of Bern in 2019 and 2022. In 2023, he completed an MSc in Orthodontic Sciences at the University of Ferrara and was a Senior Tutor at the University of Catania from 2022 to 2023. In 2023, he was awarded the "Audience Award for Best Research Poster" at the International Osteology Symposium Barcelona. Dr. Zappalà currently works as a private practitioner in Catania, pursuing an academic career in periodontology and oral surgery.

Clinicians are often faced with the dilemma of whether to extract or maintain periodontally compromised teeth. Although extraction and implant placement may seem like an attractive quick-fix option, this article shows how the evidence for the benefits of this approach is poor. The authors make the argument for the value of periodontally compromised teeth and for the importance of increasing awareness of the potentially good long-term outcomes of questionable teeth.
