Charlotte Stilwell
Dr. Charlotte Stilwell is a specialist prosthodontist in private practice in Harley Street, London. She trained at the Royal Dental College in Copenhagen, Denmark, followed by postgraduate training at Barts and The London School of Medicine and Dentistry. She is a senior lecturer at University Clinics of Dental Medicine, Geneva, and an examiner for the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh. Charlotte Stilwell is the current ITI President and has been editor-in-chief of the ITI Online Academy and the chair of the ITI Curriculum task force.

Implant therapy is a well-established treatment modality but global provision is still limited. As an invasive procedure, it is not without potential risk to the patient. New providers should therefore receive comprehensive education from the outset. The fastest growing group of providers are general dental practitioners who have to fit education in around their working hours in daytime practice. Online education offers flexibility with global access 24/7 to the didactic elements of implant dentistry and with options of different formats to suit different learning styles and preferences.

Evidence-based implant dentistry (EBID) is part of the ITI’s DNA and its philosophy, and it is clearly reflected in our Purpose, Mission, and Value statements. It is one of our key differentiators and reassures dentists and ultimately patients that we strive for excellence in everything we do.
The aim of this position paper is to define EBID and offer a clear, consistent, and practical instrument to help its implementation in everyday clinical practice.
