Bilal Al-Nawas
Professor Dr. med. Dr. med. dent. Bilal Al-Nawas is Chairman of the Clinic of Oral- and Maxillofacial Surgery, Plastic Surgery of the University Medical Center, J. Gutenberg University Mainz and an international faculty member at Kyung Hee University School of Dentistry, Seoul, Korea. He graduated in dentistry and medicine from the University of Mainz to which he has been affiliated for more than 20 years. His implant dentistry interests lie in clinical studies and basic research; compromised patients with risk factors or local bone deficiency, head & neck oncology and cleft reconstructions. He is Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Dental Implantology ZZI, and sits on the boards of various scientific journals. Prof. Al-Nawas is Officer for Infection Control and QM of the German Society of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery (DGMKG). He is a Fellow of the ITI, Chair of the ITI Research Committee, and a member of the ITI Board of Directors.

The topic of Group 3 was "Oral Medicine", which addressed the influence of both material- and anti-resorptive drug-associated factors on clinical and biological outcomes and complications in implant dentistry. Focused questions addressed the following 3 categories: (1) Implant materials other than titanium (alloys); (2) Transmucosal abutment materials other than titanium (alloys); (3) Medications affecting bone metabolism.
Insights
Evidence-based implant dentistry (EBID) is part of the ITI’s DNA and its philosophy, and it is clearly reflected in our Purpose, Mission, and Value statements. It is one of our key differentiators and reassures dentists and ultimately patients that we strive for excellence in everything we do.
The aim of this position paper is to define EBID and offer a clear, consistent, and practical instrument to help its implementation in everyday clinical practice.
